Falling prices to accelerate fingerprint sensor adoption

Average selling prices (ASP) of fingerprint sensors are set to fall another 30% in 2016 which will accelerate their adoption by handset makers, according to sources at Taiwan-based IC design houses.

Fingerprint-sensor ASPs had been as high as US$7-8, but started to fall in the second half of 2015 due to an increase in the number of suppliers leading to fiercer competition in the market, said the sources.

China- and Taiwan-based IC design houses, which were once lagging behind their international rivals in the development of fingerprint sensors, have gone through their learning curves by grabbing orders from brand handset companies, the sources indicated.

Taiwan-based Elan Microelectronics and Egis Technology (Egistec) started fulfilling orders placed by mainly China- and Korea-based handset vendors in the second half of 2015. The pair is also expected to enjoy significant shipment growth in 2016, the sources noted.

Elan and Egistec have been engaged in the design and development of fingerprint sensors for about two years, the sources added.

China-based Goodix and Silead are catching up fast by rolling out their fingerprint sensors ahead of schedule, the sources said. The two firms have obtained orders from many China-based heavyweight handset companies for 2016, the sources indicated.
