Force touch sensor demand to increase in 2H16

More China-based Android phone developers are ready to roll out new models featuring force touch screens in 2016, but orders for force touch sensors from China are unlikely to see significant increases until the second half of 2016, according to sources at Taiwan-based touchscreen IC specialists.

Huawei has already introduced its Mate S series with force touch displays, and other China-based smartphone vendors are expected to follow suit. Nevertheless, force touch sensor orders from China's smartphone companies will only become brisk starting the latter half of 2016, the sources indicated.

One reason preventing China-based smartphone makers from placing force touch sensor orders at present is that the current Android system does not fully support force touch functions, the sources said.

The cost of adding force-touch capabilities and weaker-than-expected smartphone demand in China are other reasons deterring domestic smartphone companies from rolling out new models sporting forch touch displays until the second half of 2016, the sources noted.

In China's smartphone market, the penetration rate of force touch sensors is unlikely to rise substantially until 2017, the sources said.
